Oil Spill Containment Bunding

Cleaning up a chemical spill is actually a lot harder than what people would want you to believe. However, with the proper equipment it is easier to do the job properly and know it is going to keep the chemicals from spreading all over the place. Since this is the case, you need to make sure only the proper equipment is used in containing the spills and nothing that could be considered substandard is used at all. With that being said, it is important for you to know what to look for in the oil spill containment bunding. Then you can select the proper containment bunding and know it will work for the oil spill you are cleaning up.

  • Type Of Material The Bunding Is Made From

This is a sad point of fact, but it is something to consider and that is what the bunding is made from. If the bunding is made from a material that is going to absorb the oil, then it is important to know the absorbency limits so it can be changed out. However, if the oil spill containment bunding is a permeable material you should know that as well. Then you will be able to set up additional barriers between the bunding and the actual spill.

When you are looking at the material the bunding is made from, it is also important for you to consider the reactivity of the material. Typically when their is an oil spill, other chemicals may be involved as well. Since this is the case, you should guarantee the bunding you are using is nonreactive to reduce the chance of their being any additional chemical reactions or damage. Without this, you could select a bunding that is going to react with the chemicals that were included in the spill as well.

  • Size Of The Bunding

An unfortunate fact is a lot of times when you deal with an oil spill it is going to grow tremendously and this is going to make it impossible for you to get the spill contained right away. However, by knowing about the bunding sizes you can start to determine how many of the pieces you will need to completely enclose the spill and ensure that it does not get out of the containment area. Not only that, you will also know what kind of overlap you will have available to keep the spill from leaking out at the corners where your bunding is coming together.

When you are evaluating the size of the bunding you should also look at the thickness as well. This way you will be able to lay down the bunding in the proper order and know if it is going to be built up tall enough to prevent the oil from spilling over the top of the bunding or not.

  • Ability To Layer The Bunding

This is an aspect that you may have never thought about having to do before, but in some of the spills you will have to layer the bunding to set up a proper containment field. When you have to do this, you will often find that some of the bunding is not meant to be layered because it will constantly roll off of each other or because of the way it was constructed it is not meant to have anything set on it. With that being said, it is important to realize you need to look at if the bunding can be layered and how it is to be situated if it needs to be layered.

  • Can The Bunding Float

Oil spills on water are never a good thing beacuse they can spread so quickly. However, just like the containment bunding on land, you need to use some type of bunding to keep the oil in one place on the water as well. Since this is the case, you need to look to see if the bunding that you are buying is able to float or not. If it cannot float, then you may need to look for one that can float to avoid the additional expense and storage space of getting two different types of bunding for your job.

  • How The Bunding Is To Be Used

Finally you need to look at how the bunding is to be used and if you can easily train all of your staff on how to use it, but also how long it is going to take before it is fully ready to be used. By getting this information before you complete the purchase it will be easier for you to know for certain if the bunding will be used properly for your business or not. However, it will also let you know what kind of training program you will need to put in place to guarantee it is being used properly.

Oil spills are very devastating to the environment. However, what you need to realize is you can contain the spills if you have the proper equipment for the job. This is when you should know about some of the things to consider when you decide to buy oil spill containment bunding. By knowing about these different things, it will be easy for you to find the right bunding and know it will work for the job you have of containing any of the oil spills you may encounter in your line of work.
